How to Calculate GST: Formula & Examples

Understanding how to calculate GST manually is useful, even if you use our GST calculator. The GST calculation formula changes based on whether the tax is included or excluded.

1. GST Exclusive (Adding Tax)

Used when tax is added *on top* of the base price.

GST Amount = (Base Price × GST%) / 100
Net Price = Base Price + GST Amount

Example: For a ₹1,000 item at 18% GST:
₹1,000 × 18% = ₹180 Tax. Total = ₹1,180.

2. GST Inclusive (Reverse Calculation)

Used to find the base price from the MRP.

GST Amount = Total - [Total × {100 / (100 + GST%)}]
Base Price = Total Price - GST Amount

Example: For a ₹1,180 MRP at 18% GST:
Base Price = ₹1,000. Tax = ₹180.

GST Inclusive vs Exclusive Meaning

GST Exclusive

The price does not include tax. Tax is added on top. Standard for B2B invoices.

GST Inclusive

The final price paid includes tax. Used to reverse-calculate revenue from an MRP.

Reverse GST Calculator: Find Base Price from MRP

A Reverse GST Calculator (which is the "Inclusive" mode in our tool) is used when you know the final Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of a product and need to extract the hidden tax to find your actual revenue.

The Common Deduction Mistake

If you sell an item for ₹1,000 (inclusive of 18% GST), you cannot simply subtract 18% from ₹1,000 to find the base price. Subtracting 18% from 1000 gives ₹820, which is incorrect. You must use reverse calculation.

The Reverse Formula

To correctly extract the base taxable value from an inclusive total, use this accounting standard formula:

Base Price = MRP / [1 + (GST Rate / 100)]

4. What is an HSN Code?

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is a 6-digit code used to classify goods for taxation. It is mandatory for invoices if annual turnover exceeds ₹5 Crores.

To find the GST percentage from a bill, use this formula: ((Final Price - Base Price) / Base Price) × 100. For example, if base price is ₹1,000 and final price is ₹1,180, the math is ((1180 - 1000) / 1000) × 100 = 18%.
